Study by GRE and PB-Consult on the Regio-S-Bahn Regensburg

The local rail passenger transport (SPNV) in the region of Regensburg/Germany can be upgraded to a suburban railway-like transport system by 2030. However, a requirement for an approximately half-hourly service around Regensburg is that the federal government significantly expands the infrastructure.

These are the results of an expert opinion commissioned by the Bayerische Eisenbahngesellschaft (BEG) together with the city of Regensburg and the district of Regensburg in 2017. The administrative districts of Amberg-SulzbachNeumarkt in der Oberpfalz and Schwandorf were also represented in the working group accompanying the project. The BEG, which plans, finances and controls the regional and suburban railway traffic on behalf of the Bavarian Ministry of Transport, will realise first improvements to the public transport services around Regensburg as early as December 2022.

The report, which was prepared under the lead management of German Rail Engineering with the participation of PB Consult and Ramboll, differentiates between two phases on the way to a Regensburg regional S-Bahn: For a first medium-term phase, the experts point out options for improving the local rail transport offer on basis of the already existing infrastructure. The second phase of the development plan deals with the comprehensive expansion of infrastructure that is required, and which must be implemented by the federal government in the long term. The results of the study are now to be implemented step by step by the Federal Government, the State of Bavaria, DB Netz, DB Station&Service and by the municipalities involved within the framework of their planning instruments and financing possibilities.
